Hunts Mule Deer |
|
A mature mule deer buck is becoming one of the most sought after trophies in North America. Throughout the western United States the mule deer has struggled against the encroachment of man. Gone are the days when hunters could drive into public land and slam their doors purposefully to get the big bucks to stand and look. Old mule deer bucks don’t often stand and look anymore.
At D&D Outfitters our October mule deer hunts are our bread and butter. We hunt private ranches where we lease the exclusive hunting rights. We have operated on many of the same ranches since our inception in 1996. These ranches go from 4500 ft. up to 8000 ft. in elevation and on a hunt you may be in Junipers, Yucca, and Cactus, or Spruce, Fir and Aspen. The predominant vegetation you’ll find will be sagebrush which is vital cover and food for the muleys.
Managing the herd on these ranches is what keeps us in business and our clients coming back, as our hunting gets better and better. Over the last several years we have instituted a rule that the guides determine what bucks are “shooters”, with the main criteria being age. The age of a buck can be hard to guess, but our goal is for every hunter to harvest a 5 ½ year old buck or older. ![]() Our method of hunting is usually spot and stalk. In the mornings and evenings guide and hunters will glass from high vantage points. We often spot bucks as far away as 1 or 2 miles then execute the most prudent stalk. Many times we spot deer so far away our hunters can’t even find them in their own binoculars. Then, after a little drive and a little hike, we pop over a rock and take a shot at an unsuspecting trophy! Come and hunt with us and discover the thrill of the stalk!
Most days hunters should see around 100 deer. It makes sense that hunters will see many younger bucks while searching for that “shooter”. Hunters, on average, have been seeing 1 or 2 “shooters” a day. One of our goals at D&D Outfitters is to honestly represent our hunts and trophy potential. Our mule deer bucks don’t reach record book size. Our biggest bucks will score 170 to 180 B&C inches, and most of our bucks will be in the 130 to 160 inch range. Hunters will also find that several of our “shooters” are mature 3 by 3 bucks. In 2004 we had a hunter harvest a 34 inch buck that was basically a huge 3 point. ![]() ![]() Some of the limited quota deer areas around us also hold great trophy mule deer. We also offer guided hunts in November on mostly public land. These are more of a desert type hunt that catches big bucks in the rut. Hunters planning these hunts should remember they will usually require significantly more hiking than our ranch hunts. There are much lower deer densities in these habitats, but they are managed to be trophy areas. We feel like with our experience and expertise we can lead you to one of the best bucks in the area. These limited quota tags will probably take building preference points for a few years, but the wait will be worth it. Check out a SPECIAL DEAL on the preference point page. |
